The grapes for our MadFish Grenache Shiraz are sourced from two diverse West Australian regions, with Grenache coming from the Swan Valley and Shiraz from the Great Southern. Each delivers fruit with different flavour profiles that contribute beautifully to this classic combination. The resulting wine is deliciously easy-to-drink, yet layered and complex – a fabulous example of what WA Grenache Shiraz has to offer.

Once harvested, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with traditional pump-overs carried out each day to aid fruit and tannin development. The parcels of fruit are then pressed to French oak barriques for 12 months of maturation to encourage wine development and structural complexity. The use of French oak allows for the integration of dusty savoury tannins.

Origins

Grenache and Shiraz are two varieties inextricably linked to the history of the Australian wine industry. Grenache was one of the original varieties planted in the country back in the 1800s. In the early 2000s, there was a decline in plantings, however, this variety made an impressive comeback with the increase in popularity of the ‘GSM’ blend, in which it comprises the largest component. Shiraz, on the other hand, is indisputably the classic Aussie red wine. This can be seen first and foremost in its name, which is unique to this island continent, elsewhere it is called ‘Syrah’.

About

Grenache is a late-ripening grape variety and as such, it needs to be planted in warm to hot climates. It also happens to be drought resistant meaning it is particularly well-suited to the hot, dry regions of Australia. Shiraz also prefers a warmer climate where it is able to fully ripen. The saying, ‘what grows together – goes together’ can certainly be applied here as these two grapes thrive in similar climatic conditions, and when blended create an appealing and harmonious whole.

Tasting Notes

MadFish Grenache Shiraz offers dark cherry and plum aromas, overlayed with cinnamon spice, stewed rhubarb and subtle floral notes on the nose. Striking plum, cherry, blue and blackberry fruits meld seamlessly together with layers of allspice and subtle oak influence. Grenache shows off its cherry, spice, savouriness, and rustic tannin credentials, while the Shiraz brings bright fruit sweetness and palate weight to this well-balanced marriage of fruit and texture. A wine with an inviting jubey-fruit sweetness throughout the mid-palate, fine tannins, and impeccable length.
